One Nature @ Some Dudes Basement: September 31, 1995

Nothing can top the feeling of a good basement show. The musty smell, the single light bulb hanging from the ceiling, the overpowering feeling of claustrophobia as way too many punks begin to cram into one room. Above all, basement shows are a cheap way to see some rad bands. On Sept. 31, 1995, One Nature headlined a basement show that featured and assortment of local bands.

I showed up in time to catch the last opening act, Autumn. The band put on a pretty decent set, but for some reason the lead singer looked like a replica of Luke PErry (imagine a punk rock 90210). The place was packed with hundreds of vegan poseur skaters. Argh! Most of whom had this belief that dancing involved elbowing the person behind them. Learn how to dance, or stay out of the pit!

One Nature seemed to be the untitled headliner of the evening. The crowd was enthralled by the band, and the pit grew quite wild as the songs grew more powerful. Never in my life had I seen a lead singer with such a connection to his lyrics. He twisted and mangled his body in a very Jello Biafra-like fashion—it was almost scary. There music was both melodious and vicious, constantly penetrating the crowd to an overwhelming response. One Nature performed all the songs of both of their 7" singles and most of the songs from their demo. To top it all off the crowd was treated to a rendition of "Eye of the Tiger."
