“Dark ‘N’ Mighty”
Hairball 8
Just when you thought that all metalcore psychobilly bands sucked there comes along a band like the Hellbats that makes you go, “Shit, I can have my cake and eat it to.” The Hellbats play balls-to-the-wall punk that’s as brutal as hardcore in its heyday, yet the upright basslines thump as smooth as a wild west rockabilly band.
Sacrilege you say! Seriously, and get this. They’re from France.
“Queen Orchid” blows the record open with some wild hooks and thick as hell guitar riffs. We’re talking waves of sound blasting out at a 100 mph with no dead ends in site. “Grandma Death” and “The Lonely Hero” slow things down a bit, but that wall of distortion is still there, and the tack tack tack bass line is addicting.
The only problem is that the music often times drowns out the vocals. The guitars are mixed way high, which is (for better or worse) what give the record such a sludge metal sound.
With most songs hovering around the two and a half minute mark, “Dark ‘N’ Mighty is as fast as it is loud. This record is a must for fans of the darker side of psychobilly–think Demented Are Go! or The Slanderin.’ This is music to break your neck to.
