On That Note: The New Cars, Blondie, The Robocop Kraus

New Cars Blond Tour1.jpgThe dumbest reunion ever has just been announced. Introducing the New Cars. Kinda of like the Doors of the 21st Century, the new Cars will feature original guitarist Elliot Easton and keyboardist Greg Hawkesalong with an “all-star” group of rockers: vocalist/guitarist Todd Rundgren, fellow Utopia bassist/vocalist Kasim Sulton and former Tubes drummer Prairie Prince. Yes people, Ric Ocasek is still alive and kicking, but will he be singing for the band? The answer is no. The band will be touring with Blondie on what’s being build as their last tour ever, according to their press people. Read more »

Koffin Kats “Straying From The Pack”

KoffinKats_Straying.jpgKoffin Kats
“Straying From The Pack”
HB8 Records

The Koffin Kats just don’t quit. They’ve pumped out three releases in just as many years, and have been touring the country relentlessly. The eight track “Straying From The Pack” takes its lead from last year’s full-length “Inhumane” taking the Kat’s punk-infused rockabilly formula and cranking it to break-neck speeds.

Here’s the catch, The Koffin Kats play super-fast psychobilly (we’re talking metal licks here folks), but Vic Victor’s croon is so damn clear and smooth, you think you’re listening to Nick Cave on crank. Top that off with some addictive choruses and a total running time of of 16 and a half minutes, and you have a recipe for rock ‘n’ roll.

The best part is that there isn’t a clunker on the record, and you get another part of the “Graveyard Tree,” a tale of undying (or is it dying love). With the 12 Step Rebels out of the picture, there is no stopping the Koffin Kats from taking over the psychobilly world, and hell, they’re only like 23 years old.

On That Note: Slackers, Tiger Baby, Frank Black

The_Slackers_Band_Photo_2005.jpgHot off a string of East Coast and Canadian dates, The Slackers return to New York, opening for London’s The Pogues, and performing songs off their new album Peculiar on March 16 and 18 at the new Nokia Theater in Times Square.

Souvenir Recording artists Tiger Baby are gearing up for the release of their second full-length album “Noise Around Me” on May 23, 2006. The record will include the bonus US-only track, a lush and iconoclastic cover of Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart.” Read more »

Love Equals Death “Nightamerica”

“Nightamerica”
Fat Wreck Chords

Whether they know it or not, Love Equals Death are graduates of the AFI/Alkaline Trio school of punk rock, mixing punk and melodic hardcore to create a very accessible album for kids who find the aforementioned bands too hard or wussy—Love Equals Death is a perfect medium.

Songs on “Nightmerica” are organized like a crescendo, slowly building up to a massive attack of sound in the middle of the album before steadily dropping to an pseudo-acoustic track at the end. “Bombs Over Brooklyn” is reminiscent of Boy Sets Fire when they were good, followed by a singalong hardcore track with a helluva catchy chorus “When we fall we will pick up the pieces/ We know that we’ll never/ Be down for too long.” Singer Chon Travis conjures up Echo and the Bunnymen (never thought I’d say that on a punk rock review) on “Lottery” just before transitioning into act II, in this case the AFI-sounding portion of the record. CHAOS AT NYC COMIC CON! part 2

eatsword.jpg

Chuck Nasty continues his harrowing tale of how he survived the first ever New York Comic Book Convention.

Now that I had gotten inside the convention it was time to do what I came for. Give out some cds, get free stuff, and meet Aria Giovanni. I looked around at stuff for a bit, there is a section at these conventions called Artists Alley, where they usually put up and coming artists and indie comics. Read more »

Eagles of Death Metal “Death By Sexy”

“Death By Sexy”
Downtown

So how do you follow up the greatest album of 2004? If you’re the Eagles of Death Metal you make the greatest record of all time. Every second of “Death By Sexy” drips with sex and rock ‘n’ roll, and every note makes you want to get up and dance. Not to mention they urge to yell, “Praise the devil” at the top of your lungs.

Kicking down the door with “I Want You So Hard (Boy’s Bad News)” singer Jesse “The Devil” Hughes and company prove that the band isn’t a one trick pony. We are talking rock here from start to finish. The guitars feature short, choppy riffs. Guitar solos are used sparingly and focus on two things–twang and distortion. Read more »
