The Banner
“Each Breath Haunted”
Ferret Music
The Banner are horror-hardcore from Dirty Jerz. “DEVILHAWKS†is a great homage to Danzig and destroys everything in its path. The party keeps rolling as “Venom and Hope†makes me want to do a front flip off a stage. “Each Breath Haunted†sounds like His Hero is Gone and Deathreat with a sense of humor. All the songs have a horror-movie feel and are really fun.
The entire record is thrashy with fast guitars, short songs, and fun mosh parts. “Sovereign Black Pit” is an eerie instrumental that would be right at home on a late 80’s Slayer release. This shit is DARK.
The Banner should get even bigger with this release. Almost a perfect hardcore record on-par with American Nightmare’s “Background Music” and Modern Life is War’s “Witness.” I’m going to be listening to this for a while and who doesn’t like a band that thanks the entire State of New Jersey? If bands like The Banner and Doomriders continue to put out records, there might be some hope for hardcore yet. Get this.

The comic world was brought to its knees on Feb. 24–26 as thousand of fans swarmed the Jacob Javitz Center in New York City, for what was the first major comic convention in recent history to be held in the Big Apple.
Up until now, fans had three options to satiate their convention needs. a) Fly to California each summer for the monster San Diego Comic Con. b) Travel to the struggling Wizard World convention in Philadelphia, or c) go to one of the half dozen or so scummy basement cons that are teeming with fat, smelly men selling off Star Wars toys at insane prices.
New York needed a comic convention worthy of one of the most important cities in the world, and Reed Business Information decided they would be the one to put it on. There was only one problem… they had no idea how many people it was going to attract. Chuck Nasty of Love Cinema Vol. 6 dared to conquer Comic Con. This is his story. Read the rest of this entry »

Lovehatehero
“Just Breathe”
Ferret Music
Lovehatehero went to the Geoff Rickley school of Emo Rock. This sounds so much like Thursday it’s not even funny. “This Dream Called Life,” “Second Chance,” and “These Fists are Grenades” are all passable emo/screamo myspace songs for 16 year olds.
There’s thousands of bands that sound like this in the United States. Lovehatehero do little to stand out from the pack, but I’m sure if they’re pretty enough they’ll have a major label contract in their hands in a matter of months.
The girl singer on “Theatre of Robots” is a step in the right direction. Juliet Simms co-wrote the song and it’s pretty solid. Similar to the guy/girl duets on all of those From Autumn to Ashes discs you don’t listen to anymore.

Sasquatch and the Sickabillies, Koffin Kats, Rigor Phallus at Asbury Lanes, Asbury Park, NJ: March 4, 2006
Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park, New Jersey is a strange place. From the outside, the venue is camouflaged by its surroundings—a shore town wasteland that can’t seem to recover from urban decay. The only way to really spot the club is to notice a hollow, relic of a bowling pin that acts as a club sign.
Inside, however, it looks like someone put a sheet over a giant 1950s bowling alley and let it collect dust for half a century, only to be rediscovered completely intact—Kind of like finding that 1934 Ford hiding in your grandmother’s garage. Boomerang designs on every wall, vintage bowling alleys with no digital score sheets in sight, and clientele that dresses era specific to add to the ambiance. This place is a true hidden gem.
The poison for the night was psychobilly. Read the rest of this entry »

“This Was Always Meant to Fall Apart”
Ferret Music
“This Was Always Meant to Fall Apart” starts out with “Obsolete”, a quiet indie rock jam that sounds like Hopesfall or Code Seven. I started to think, hey maybe Ferret put out another good record like the Boys Night Out disc–then the second track started and it was all tech metal/math rock and I wanted to cut my ears off.
“On Fire” slows down the metal and takes a more Helmet-like groove that suits this band so much better. This band could be great if they stuck to this style. Another track that works well is “Lyssophobia”. The rest of the record is one huge blur of metal guitars and screams.
Check those two tracks out for a quick metal fix, but avoid the rest. Ferret better shape it up. For fans of Nora and everything else where every song sounds the same!

Remembering Never
“God Save Us”
Ferret Music
Remembering Never is a slightly better-than-you-would-expect Hatebreed clone. These hardcore thugs pull no punches and attack religion, meat eaters, and “shit talkers that talk on the internet but don’t say shit face to face at shows”. Right—these boys MUST be hardcore with that mentality.
Don’t get me wrong the mosh beatdown on “God Save Us” is pretty impressive. Despite having a lame outlook on life and being pretty juvenile, i.e. “Fuck God. Fuck Government!” I bet kids go apeshit in the pit. Let me be the first to say that if you are over 23 or 24 and still dancing in the pit than you’re a fucking retard. You should probably stop and start a band like this.
“God Save Us” is run of the mill tough guy hardcore. If it gives you a boner to hear 20 minutes of brutality, than give it a shot.
