UPSO Brings the Noise to Kid Robot NYC

DSCN2477.JPG

Kid Robot was the place to be Thursday night, as vinyl and art fans crammed into Kid Robot’s Soho location to see the lastest work by Dustin Hostetler, better known as UPSO. The man was really cool, signing anything anyone gave him, including dozens of his Series 2 Dunny, which he admits is not very indicative of his present work (it was also the first Dunny with facial features on the ears). NoFX “Wolves in Wolves’ Clothing”

nofx.jpgNoFX
“Wolves in Wolves’ Clothing”
Fat Wreck Chords

NoFX is back with a new record, and a guaranteed spot on the Warped Tour. Too bad we’re not in an election year, because “Wolves” struggles to reach the intensity of “War on Errorism.” The songs aren’t bad, but the best tracks on here also appeared on the band’s near-perfect e.p. “Never Trust a Hippie.”

Sure there’s plenty of rocking tracks on here that show off why NoFX have ruled the punk scene for 20 odd years, but for every “USA-holes,” there’s a mildly entertaining “60%.” “Seeing Double at the Triple Rock” is the best NoFX song ever, if not one of the best punk rawk tunes put to tape, but it’s been available for months on “Hippie.” Too many songs start out boring and ramp up to coolness, but songs this short-attention span generation might fast forward a track like “We March to the Beat of an Indifferent Drummer” way before it starts to rock.

Everything else is on “Wolves” is note for note NoFX. Will this record launch the band back to “Punk in Drublic” fame—it’s doubtful, but this record is sure to please fans that haven’t been satiated with the four plus hours of material the band has released in the past two years.

Ignite “Our Darkest Days”

“Our Darkest Days”
Abacus

Check out a track from this record on this week’s Radio Bungalo>>>

“Our Darkest Days” is a tried and true melodic hardcore album, a style that seems to have gone extinct with the ‘90s. Singer Zoli’s vocals are sung like a manic opera singer, punctuating every word and carrying every note. The music is catchy as hell, sporting an adrenaline rush that would make early Offspring fans proud. Never a slouch in the production department, Ignite’s sound is tight as hell, even without major label support.

Never one to dodge the political bullet, Ignite bashes the state near and far. “Poverty for All” is a call for the end of oppression in Zoli’s home country of Hungary, while “Bleeding” tackles the death of liberty in America. Just like every Ignite record, “Our Darkest Days” gets a little plodding halfway through. Ignite have a signature sound, and that sound can grate on non-fans after say song number six. That is until the second to last track, where they finally unleash their live mainstay, a fantastic cover of U2’s “Sunday Bloody Sunday.” Read more »

“Go Cat Go!” A Tribute to the Stray Cats

Hairball 8 Records

Check out tracks from this record on this week’s Radio Bungalo>>>

I feel for any band given the assignment of covering a Stray Cats song, because no matter what they do they will never be able to touch the guitar-playing genius of Brian Setzer. That said, every band on here does their best to pay homage to the legendary rockabilly band while staying true to their own style.

Some bands rock a little more, some go the psychobilly route, and some stay as true to the original as possible. Mad Marge and the Stonecutters tear through “Fishnet Stockings” showing off why they are being called the best female-fronted psychobilly band hands down. Read more »

Raised Fist “Sound of the Republic”

“Sound of the Republic”
Burning Heart

Check out Raised Fist on this week’s Radio Bungalo>>>

Ever wanted to know what it feels like to be slapped in the face with a cinder block? Come on, just for shits and giggles? Well Burning Heart Records took the heavy lifting out of a beating by hoisting the entire brick into a half hour CD teeming with unrelenting brutality—Nothing about this band is tame or easy on the ears.

Hailing from some far out Scandinavian county, Raised Fist take your traditional hardcore and thrash metal style and triple the speed of the guitars, jack up the drums to near-demonic speeds, and wrap it all around Alexander Rajkovic’s unrelenting vocal attack. Read more »
