“Our Darkest Days†is a tried and true melodic hardcore album, a style that seems to have gone extinct with the ‘90s. Singer Zoli’s vocals are sung like a manic opera singer, punctuating every word and carrying every note. The music is catchy as hell, sporting an adrenaline rush that would make early Offspring fans proud. Never a slouch in the production department, Ignite’s sound is tight as hell, even without major label support.
Never one to dodge the political bullet, Ignite bashes the state near and far. “Poverty for All†is a call for the end of oppression in Zoli’s home country of Hungary, while “Bleeding†tackles the death of liberty in America. Just like every Ignite record, “Our Darkest Days†gets a little plodding halfway through. Ignite have a signature sound, and that sound can grate on non-fans after say song number six. That is until the second to last track, where they finally unleash their live mainstay, a fantastic cover of U2’s “Sunday Bloody Sunday.â€
It’s crazy that in the last ten some years, Ignite has only released three proper albums and an e.p. Much like Orange County brethren Social Distortion, Ignite open themselves up to break-up rumors for taking five years to finish a record. The funny thing is that after all this time; their music doesn’t change or mature. What you expect from Ignite is what you get, and for most folks that isn’t a bad thing.
