Coming of age as a scrappy young punk rocker in the mid 1990’s, there were a few bands that were always mentioned. NOFX, Bad Religion, Pennywise, Descendents, and The Queers were always blasting from one of my friends crappy cars. Rock ‘N’ Roll Soldiers “The Two EPsâ€
Oooooh a split release between a super-big major label and the indie king of garage. This has to be a solid record, and the Rock ‘N’ Roll soldiers don’t fail. This CD is a rock epic from the start. Kicking out the jams with the balls to the wall “Anthem†and perpetually pounding all the way to the last track.
The guitars are a fuzzfest of distortion and mayhem–think The Mooney Suzuki after a few speedballs. Singer Marty Larson Xu has the vocal swagger of Iggy Pop and Mick Jagger, but sports a little more of a punk edge. These guys play rock like a gun is being pointed at their head, except with fun handclapping and three-part harmonies. There’s a sheen of ’70s funk flavor on tracks like “Habits I Have,†but the groove ramps up to a fever pitch on “Funny Little Feeling†and “Barbarian.â€
The best part is that there’s no ballads in sight–just songs that rock and songs that rock harder. Some tracks get wierd with keyboards and odd noises, but most of the record is just straight forward rock and roll. Put this record on 10 and crank out some air guitar, cause the Rock ‘N’ Roll soldiers are ready to kick some ass.
