It’s hard to visit the Garden State and not notice the Tombstone Brawler’s name plastered on almost every show flyer. The band has been rocking the East Coast for seven years with their brand of full-on rock n’ roll and creepy psychobilly lyrics. Life In A Bungalo caught the Tombstones at a recent NJ show. The band tore the place up with a more traditional rockabilly style (think Americana Punk) rather than the motorpsycho death metal that’s been exported out of Europe lately. Highlights included a note for note translation of Iron Maiden’s “Number of the Beast” from metal to honky tonk. Check out the band June 17 at the “South Orange Peel Out” for an entire day of hot rods and rock ‘n’ roll. Note: This interview was done prior to the departure of singer Charlie Splatterhead. Rhythm guitarists Lord Zacher has taken his place.
There are five guys in the band. Doesn’t that break some sort of law of psychobilly? Why go that route?
Pete: Cause we rule. Seriously, it’s because we need two guitarists for the type of music we want to play, and it gives us a much fuller sound. Read the rest of this entry »

Yesterday, the artist known as motorbot posted a picture of this custom Kaws designed to look like Mickey Mouse. I’ve seen a ton of his work around the Web, including a fantastic ham-shaped Labbit, but this boggled my mine. It wasn’t that the work was shocking (though it is pretty awesome)–what made me ponder it for quite a while was how much of a difference just a few simple changes can make to an existing figure. I was also surprised that the artist chose to use such a sought after, expensive toy. In the end, the custom piece is priceless, but it is still something to think about. Life In A Bungalo grabbed motorbot from his busy schedule to talk to him about his perception of lowbrow art and how he went about developing his own style. Read the rest of this entry »

Crucified Barbara
“In Distortion We Trust”
Liquor & Poker Music
Crucified Barbara sounds like Kittie without the death metal vocals, even though they are displayed in all their metal chick glory on the cover of this bad boy. Crucified Barbara, despite their horrid name, have created a cheesy and fun All-Girl, think a dirtier Donnas, hard rock album.
They’re all about cliched sex, drugs, and rock & roll lyrics. “Play Me Hard” starts the record and sets the tone. Songs like “Motorfucker”, “Going Down”, and “I Wet Myself” are so cheesy that you’ve gotta smile.
I’m not sure if this band takes themselves seriously or not, but with lyrics like this gem, “Baby come and save me/I’m such a mess/Help me inhale now/I’m going down.” I bet they’re awesome live.

The Sounds of Animals Fighting
“Lover, The Lord Has Left Usâ€
Equal Vision
The Sounds of Animals Fighting are a super group. I have no idea who is responsible for this experimental train wreck, nor do I care…ultimately it serves as mildly entertaining background music.
“Skullflower†sounds as if it was ripped directly from that last Mars Volta record that is collecting dust on your shelf. Falsetto yelps, unintelligible chanting, and looped effects are all over the place. “Horses in the Sky†introduces a looped metal guitar lead that makes you press that skip track button pretty quickly.
“The Heretic†is the most accessible track on the album, but once you skip through all the filler, spoken word, and electronic nonsense you probably won’t care about the track. Avoid this record like the plague.

AFI
“Decemberunderground”
Interscope
Josh: In 2003, it seemed like the AFI juggernaut was unstoppable. In May they released “Sing The Sorrow” which turned into a massive hit. They toured nonstop. They were MTV darlings. For some reason, their brand of eyeliner punk had struck a chord with everyone under the age of 19. And then, they disappeared. Maybe it was because their record label was sold or maybe it was Davey Havok’s throat problems. Regardless of the reason, they were silent. But now, more than three years since their last release, AFI are back with “Decemberunderground.” Read the rest of this entry »
