Dunny Series 3 Unleashed on NYC

DSCN2647.JPG

Hordes of vinyl art fans packed the walkways of Prince Street this hot, muggy evening to get a glimpse of the Series 3 Dunnys released earlier in the day. Starting at 6pm, the mob swarmed into the tiny toy store, grabbing cases, single packs, and custom work designed just for the event–dubbed a trading night. Case after case was purchased, as hundreds of fans tearing into the boxes with their teeth, just to find out if they got the figure needed to complete the set. Old people, fat people, skinny people, men, women and hipsters dripped with sweat just to open every single Dunny and to find out if they got one of the rare chase figures or better yet, a golden ticket redeemable for an even rarer 8″ Dunny.

Outside everyone clustered together with local artists to swap their doubles and grab free swag courtesy of Kid Robot. Drinks were flowing and more fun was had than a New York City blackout. Similar events took place at underground toy stores and galleries around the country, but only New York can you stare dubiously at a 40 year old with a “I’m a Dunny trader” sticker while being heckled by hot chicks in mini skirts. Here are some picture of the event to wet your appetite.

Who is Abe Lincoln, Jr?

abe.jpg

For weeks toy fans were speculating what the super-secret chase figure would be in the latest set of Kid Robot’s widely popular Dunny series. In the past, Dunnys designed by kings of lowbrow like Kozik and Coop have spurred hundreds of vinyl art collectors to scurry to hunt down these hard to find chases.

Then the news broke. Last week, at San Diego Comic Con, a few lucky fans scored a Dunny that looked like no other. Sporting a top hat, a beard, and a set of buck shot between the eyes, the latest chase turned out to be a 3D version of President Lincoln, by none other than New York’s very own Abe Lincoln, Jr. So, who is this crazy artist that has the vinyl and art worlds buzzing about this controversial (not to mention extremely rare) new figure? Life In A Bungalo decided to find out from the man himself. Read more »

Mercy Killers “Blood Love” & Enemy Rose “split ep”

Hellcat

Mercy Killers/Enemy Rose
“Split e.p.”
I Scream Records

The Mercy Killers play rock that straddles the line between melodic and just plain dark. We’re not talking AFI or Alkaline Trio dark here–these guys are tried and true punks–but the sound is far softer than expected from a band that has it’s roots in Lars and the Bastards and The Original Sinners.

Their debut full-length on Epitaph imprint Hellcat, is awash with a fine layer of distortion. Drums hammer down on songs like “Hollow” and “I’m Not Wasted,” while songs like “End Transmission” and the title track drips with subtle guitar nuances and pure singing by Craig Fairbaugh who has the rasp of Mike Ness tweaked with a near-invisible lisp. It’s the perfect punk rock voice. Read more »

Towers of London “Blood Sweat & Towers”

towers.jpgTowers of London
“Blood Sweat & Towers”
TVT

What’s more surprising than finding out that TVT is still a label? Finding out that said label has some loud ass rock ‘n’ roll on tap. Towers of London play balls to the wall rock a la The Supersuckers, but with a touch more attitude and a lot more testosterone.

This bunch of U.K. exports feel like the Sex Pistols, but groove way more than some generic punk band. Songs like “I’m a Rat” and “Fuck It Up” are guitar shredders with little room to breathe, while “Good Times” and “Start Believing” are modern day party anthems. The singer sounds a lot like Jessie from D-Generation, but with a real cockney accent. The Towers of London just exude rock with every note, every scream and every expletive not deleted.

“Blood Sweat and Towers” is for rock fans only. There’s isn’t a wussy track on this record, and fans of good music need to make a B-line to the local Best Buy and pick up this record as soon as humanly possible. The Bungalo couldn’t recommend this more.
