Obey “Supply & Demand” The Art of Shepard Fairey

Obey “Supply & Demand” The Art of Shepard Fairey
Ginko Press
One might argue that an artist who is most famous for making stickers is hardly in need of a tome as massive as “Supply & Demand,” but after thumbing through the 330 plus pages in this monster hardcover coffee table edition it’s hard not to notice just how big of an impression Shep Fairey has made to the urban art world.
Starting from his first Andre The Giant sticker, this book tracks Fairey’s achievements throughout his artistic career. Exhaustive is an understatement. Every poster, toy, and flyer Fairey screen printed or designed is in this book–We’re talking thousands of photos and large size reproductions of his work. All the billboards he liberated, including the badass Giant poster designed to look like the Misfit’s skull, the redesigned Obey posters, and dozens of paintings of punk and hip-hop legends.
“From the beginning, Obey Giant opened my eyes to many facets of capitalism and consumerism-trend psychology that revolves around supply-and-demand economic theory,” Fairey expounds in the introduction. Fairey’s comments are weaved throughout this monster book, in interviews, criticism and the occasional band review. Letters from graffiti organizations proponents and fans as well as a detailed history of the birth of the Obey empire makes this book a fantastic read as well as a visual spectacle.
