Joester Rock Icons
Everything was on the down low tonight, as New York-based artist/photographer Steve Joester premiered his new series of painted rock photos, “Chaos and Control” at one of Andy Warhol’s legendary factories. Located in Union Square, the former art laboratory has since been turned into office space, but Joester managed to nab the facility for the night, and with some sprucing up, returned the place to its former glory.
For those not in the know, Joester creates mixed-media works of art using original photos he’s taken over the years of bands and musicians like The Sex Pistols, Neil Young, and Bob Marley. Rather than just frame the photos for show, the artist has embellished them with paint, glitter, and a menagerie of found decorations. The highlight of the show is a massive collage of photos of The Clash. Every photo in the collage is breathtaking, but taken as a whole, the piece is nothing short of awesome.
To pay homage to the factory’s famous former owner, Joester reserved an office to display a series of photos featuring Andy Warhol and Judas Priest. The juxtaposition of a young Rob Halford in his traditional leather garb standing next to a well-dressed older Warhol is just amazing.
Too bad the event was for one night only. For more info on Steve Joester, visit his Web site at www.joesterrockicons.com. He has a bunch of limited photos available for a decent price.
