Dalek & Mars-1 at Jonathan LeVine Gallery

The stars came out in droves at last night’s preview show for the Dalek/Mars-1 joint show at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Everlast, Ron English, Eric White, Nouar, and many more pop art veterans turned out to support the spotlighted artists as well as promote their own works in LeVine’s adjacent gallery, dubbed The Swap Meet.

Dalek, standing nearly a head taller than everyone else, was happy to chat about the new direction he’s taking his artwork. Moving away from his traditional illustrated style of painting, Dalek deconstructed his space monkey character, producing a collection of abstract canvases detailed with hundreds of circles and pastel paints. The artist clearly stepped up his game, further solidifying his transition into the fine art world. Read more »

UNKL Amassing Street Team

picture-3.pngJust got this email from the UNKL people.

“We’re recruiting fans of UNKL (Funkls) from around the planet to spread the word about what we do in their hometown. Don’t worry, we’re not going to dress you up in a giant SUG suit (okay, we would if we had one), but we might call on you every now and again to take a stack of postcards to your favorite local comic shops and record stores, or tack up some posters around your town. We might even just request that you stick an UNKL sticker on your bike, or tell five of your friends about our toys.

We’ll thank you by letting you in on extra special UNKL secrets and sending you little boxes of goodies full of whatever we can come up with – be it art prints, t-shirts… heck, we’ll bake you cookies if we have to.

For now, spots on the team are really limited. Let us know NOW if you want to be a devoted member of the UNKL Army by sending your full name, address and t-shirt size to leah@unklbrand.com.”

Gorilla Biscuits were one of those bands that never fit nicely into a punk rock category. They were too catchy for hardcore, too straightedge for punk, too heavy for Offspring fans, but the band had an energy that seemed to appeal to everyone that ever wore a leather jacket or a Champion hoodie and camo shorts. Tragically, most of their fans discovered them after they broke up in the early ’90s. Those that got to see them on their Start Today tour still brag about it, and rightfully so. Gorilla Biscuits are legends. Read more »

Deph Dunny

Looks like Deph has released on of his massive 20″ custom Dunnys into the wild. Just received this note from him:

Hey everyone!! Its been awhile since you last heard from me. I’ve been in the lab mixing medicines for that perfect toy cure. So I’m Auctioning off one of my favorite 20″ Dunny yet. That’s right the 20″ from “The Standard” LA Kidrobot party. I treat these guys like they are my own kids. So its very hard to give them up. I decided to host an EBAY auction even though I don’t back the whole EBAYing artwork. But I figured its the only way to make things fair for everyone. So if your interested in getting your hands on this guy, Bid now. This will be your only chance at ever collecting him. Hes the only one ever made. Hand painted. Keep on the look out I have tons more work coming soon.. Thanks to everyone for being a friend and a FAN!!

BeneathMe: Hard-Edged Lads, Yet Strikingly Sensitive

Chicago, IL 3/8/07
by Michael Mcnichols

With a name like “BeneathMe,” you’d expect the band to be composed of the emo freaks dressed in tight, see-through black who work at Hot Topic. Thankfully, at the Double Door last Thursday night, the band proved to be actual hard-working rock musicians.

Lead singer M. Tex Clark writhed about like a snake charmer on crack, easily commanding the audience’s attention. His body language reminded me a lot of Josh Todd from Buckcherry, except Clark didn’t look like he’d gotten his nose broken crawling out of an opium den. He also displayed an impressively wide vocal range, switching between bellowing out lyrics forcefully and a softer, more melodic tone. Read more »
