The stars came out in droves at last night’s preview show for the Dalek/Mars-1 joint show at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Everlast, Ron English, Eric White, Nouar, and many more pop art veterans turned out to support the spotlighted artists as well as promote their own works in LeVine’s adjacent gallery, dubbed The Swap Meet.

Dalek, standing nearly a head taller than everyone else, was happy to chat about the new direction he’s taking his artwork. Moving away from his traditional illustrated style of painting, Dalek deconstructed his space monkey character, producing a collection of abstract canvases detailed with hundreds of circles and pastel paints. The artist clearly stepped up his game, further solidifying his transition into the fine art world.

Mars-1 slipped out of the preview party early after putting in a few hours of hard work on an installation piece that is about 24-hours away from completion. His new canvases are dreamy and surreal. Picture serpents, flowing waterfalls, biospheres—Mars-1 paints Utopian worlds that can only live on ones imagination.

The group “Swap Meet” show included some of the best works from some of the top artists LeVine has shown in the last few years. Two pieces stood out above everything—Ron English’s “American Depress” featuring Mickey Mouse caught in a mouse trap, and Mark Dean Veca’s “Heywood Jablomie.” From afar, the latter painting resembles a traditional Greek vase painting. Upon closer inspection, you can find hundreds of cocks and vaginas in all kinds of crazy situations. Hell, I think there’s a Fleshlight in there.

The show will be on display through April 28. Stop by tonight, Saturday, March 31, from 7-9pm for the opening.
