Lori Earley “Anima Sola”

picture-4.png

Opera Gallery presents Anima Sola, artist Lori Earley’s first East Coast solo exhibition featuring 10 large-scale paintings. For Anima Sola, Lori Earley presents an art couture collection, fusing high art with modern fashion. Inspired by the imagination of fashion icons such as Alexander McQueen or the exotic wardrobes of Jennifer Nicholson, Lori Earley’s stunning portraits of esoteric women evoke mood and form as equally poignant and delicate as the textured gowns they wear. Each elegant and edgy oil painting requires a mastery of technical skill and painstaking execution. Anima Sola will be on view at Opera Gallery from April 28 through May 19, with an an opening reception held on Saturday, April 28, from 6pm - 9pm.

Good Riddance (RIP)

Good Riddance were always a great band. They never made it big, and their albums were a bit repetitive, but you knew when Russ and company came to down, you were in for one hell of a show. -g-

From Fat Wreck: It is with a heavy heart that we have to say goodbye to one of our longtime, loyal Fat Wreck Chords bands, Good Riddance. We can’t thank them enough for letting us be associated with their band and they will be genuinely missed and fondly remembered. Find a way to make it out to their final shows and help them celebrate what they meant to all of us. Here is a farewell statement from the band…

After over ten years, eight albums and countless tours, Santa Cruz, CA’s Good Riddance has decided to call it a career. We have deliberated heavily on this decision and we all agree that it is the logical and practical next step for our band. It is with the utmost sense of gratitude and humility that we have arrived at this conclusion. We have been given a truly great gift and a tremendous opportunity to pursue a dream and we have accomplished far more than any of us ever thought possible. Read more »

Andrew Brandou “As A Man Thinketh, So He Is”

ab-web-lg.jpg

Opening Reception Saturday, April 14 from 7-11pm
On View April 14 - May 5

Corey Helford Gallery
presents “As A Man Thinketh, So He Is,” an exhibition of new paintings by Los Angeles artist Andrew Brandou. His first solo show with the gallery explores the history of Jim Jones and the People’s Temple, creating a visual roadmap of the Jonestown story. Integrating wood from significant locales of Jones’ past into the series of acrylic and silver and gold leaf paintings, Andrew Brandou’s stable of symbolic animal caricatures lead the viewer from Jim Jones’ Indiana birthplace and his days as a young preacher in the San Francisco Bay Area to his final destination - Guyana. Through his vibrant and childlike imagery, Brandou translates tragic themes into engaging narratives that are as alive with cultural and religious references as they are just plain dark fun. The exhibition includes a life-size recreation of Jones’ iconic throne, on which patrons may have a specially framed commemorative Polaroid taken. Open to the public, the reception for “As A Man Thinketh, So He Is” will take place on Saturday, April 14 from 7 to 11pm, and the show will be exhibited until May 5, 2007.

Will Eisner: Portrait of a Sequential Artist

picture-2.png

As the hotly anticipated third installment of the Spider-Man movie franchise swings into lower Manhattan at the end of the month — making its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival — Peter Parker can rest assured: he’s not alone.

In the same festival that, thanks to Spider-Man, now features panels centering on superheroes and the filmmakers who’ve brought them to life, movie-goers will also find the Discovery documentary Will Eisner: Portrait of a Sequential Life — a film celebrating the life and art of arguably the most influential creator in American comics. An artist, businessman, innovator, and visual storyteller, Eisner was a superhero of sorts, which is why it’s so fitting that his story will come to life at Tribeca Film Festival which will premiere Spider-Man 3. All Hell Breaks Loose

Consider yourself lucky if you are not a Dunny collector. This morning Kid Robot announced that the first 450 people to e-mail the company would get a shot at buying a limited 8-inch Kenzo Minami Dunny. The Dunny is limited to 350-ish and will cost $49.95. The site quickly crashed and the list was closed in 20 minutes. Those who made the cut will receive an e-mail on Thursday, April 12th at 12pm (NYC time) with a direct link to purchase the Dunny.

This isn’t the first time the Kenzo Dunny was teased. A few months back, the figure made it onto Kid Robot’s release schedule, but was quickly pulled due to quality issues. No word on whether this is the left over “good ones.”
