Hot Cross “Risk Revival”

“Risk Revival”
Equal Vision

Hot Cross has been around for about six years and was born from the ashes of Off Minor, You & I, and Saetia. The band while finally abandoning its DIY roots have created an album that well, sounds like it should have been released in 1999. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but I would have preferred the brutality and intricacies of You and I.

While not really familiar with Cross’ previous works I didn’t really find anything on this record risky. Some of it sure is catchy and poppy though. Occasionally an intense guitar burst with some throaty shrieks will make things interesting, but at this point in the band’s career maybe the risk came too late? “Kill the Name” stands out as the records best track moving at a breakneck pace with edgy guitar riffs and a catchy chorus and a nice little breakdown in the middle. Some of the guitar work on the record actually makes me think of Snapcase which is always exciting.

Having said all of that Risk Revival is a perfectly acceptable rock record reminiscent of Drive Like Jehu, Fugazi, and even early Sparta. If you yearn for the days when Punk Rock had a more DC sound and less eyeliner then maybe this is a risk you should take.

Doesn’t Rock l Kinda Rocks l Rocks l Really Rocks
