Located in the swanky Cookman Avenue section of Asbury Park, New Jersey, the Crybaby Gallery is making a name for itself by showcasing quality artwork from up and coming painters, photographers, and illustrators. This past Saturday, the gallery played host to an opening party for “Fourplay,” a collection of erotic art from a quartet of very unique artists: Carolyn Weltman, Phil Illingworth, Georgie Tier, and Neil Bruce.

Neil BruceWhat set this event off from all the other “erotic” art show is its emphasis on style rather than shock value. Weltman’s work, in particular, is drenched in subtle watercolors and even her bondage work is fanciful and pretty. Tier paints abstract bodies intertwined using only black, white, and red paints to tie the pieces together. Illingworth’s prints are fun illustrations, focusing on fetishes in a cartoonish style. Bruce’s work was the most evocative, depicting close up shots of male genitalia in bold black and white shots.

The opening reception drew a number of local artists, as well as couples looking to grab a few mini-cupcakes from the bar while checking out what the party was all about. Each artist received their own wall in the massive loft, and well-placed lights and candlelight elegantly lighted the paintings. The work is on display through August.
