Old School punk rock fans got a real treat Friday night as The Rumbler’s annual car show kicked off with a no holds barred rock festival featuring, among other cool things, a short reunion of Agnostic Front (well, three at of four members isn’t bad).
Hardcore legend Vinnie Stigma jump started the evening with a brief yet impressive set of his latest project, the aptly named Stigma. The band fired up some punk leaning rock ‘n’ roll, yet the inflection in Stigma’s voice recalled the dangerous New York hardcore of yore.
The Turbo AC’s have re-established themselves as a four piece allowing room for singer/guitarist Kevin Cole to experiment freely with his surf stylings throughout their set of blistering punk ditties. The band touched stomped about the stage blaring high-octane punk rock and a gleefully yet macho audience. Girls swooned, and the band played on. Highlights included a rousing rendition of their recent hit “1-800-EAT-SHIT,” Cole sang after announcing that bumper stickers were available.
Street rock troubadours Roger Miret and the Disasters took center stage at 10pm and the drinks started flowing. Miret took a shot of Jager after every song, amping up an already hot performance with some additional rock ‘n’ roll decadence. For those who aren’t in the know, The Disasters were conceived to kick the shit out of emo, and put the balls back in rock. The band plays fast and catchy punk, in the vein of early Rancid, but with a wail that could only come from Miret.
With three quarters of Agnostic Front in the house, there was no doubt that at some point in the evening an AF jam was bound to take place. At the end of The Disaster’s set, a mildly belligerent Miret called Stigma back on stage for a New York takeover style sing-along to “Gotta Go” and “Crucify.” “True sounds of a revolution, gotta, gotta, gotta go,” the crowd erupted in unison as Agnostic Front got to relive their glory days one more time. Smiles abound as Rumblers took the stage for massive stage dives, and the mic was passed around to all. A fun night indeed.
Edit note: Electric Frankenstein actually closed the show, but due to the miserable New Jersey transit train schedule and an equally terrible commute back from Brooklyn, Life In A Bungalo was forced to miss out on the fun. Maybe next time…
