Avenged Sevenfold "Avenged Sevenfold"

Wow. Avenged Sevenfold have officially gone off their rocker with their latest release. Taking a cue from their mascara-clad peers in My Chemical Romance, A7X have released some sort of concept monstrosity that borders on frightening.

The record pretty much begins and ends with the track number nine “A Little Piece of Heaven” that sounds less like a rock opera and more like an outtake from the soundtrack to “A Nightmare Before Christmas,” if Jack Skellingon could singer for close to nine minutes. That’s followed by a twangy country ditty. I swear I just said that.

Seriously, the review should end there, but we haven’t even scratched the surface on some of the earlier tracks on the record. The album opens with some retarded intro song that makes G’N'R’s “Get In A Ring” sound like a classic. “Almost Easy” and “Scream” should appeal to fans that liked the last record—lots of dueling leads, stuttering pianos, and overwrought vocals. “The Gunslinger” is the token cock rock ballad and “Afterlife” makes a small attempt and recalling the band’s punk roots, and features a chorus so hooky that Papa Roach would be proud.

Fans of the band are going to love this record and claim it rocks until they die. For fair weather listeners who loved “Beast and the Harlot” off the last record, this one’s going to come off like a giant pussyfest. Basically, if “City of Evil” was the band’s “Use Your Illusion,” this self-titled album comes off like a second rate “Spaghetti Incident”—minus the bad covers.
