WWE In NYC: Show You The Money

Life In A Bungalo swung by the old WWE New York in Times Square today for a press conference promoting Vince McMahon’s million dollar giveaway. Here are some tidbits:

The press conference started at noon, and fans were seated in the general floor area behind the press and fans filled out the balcony area. The place was pretty packed with tons of chanting New Yorkers.

A team of security guards went on stage at the start to unload a clear suitcase filled with money into an acrylic, see-through podium. The audience started chanting for some of the dough, to no avail. Read more »

Seeing Mad Marge and the Stonecutters perform in their home town = priceless

Sorry, but I could not resist the lame AMEX joke and there’s no other way to compare the experience of driving a million miles through the desert in a shitty PT Cruiser to check out one of the wildest live punk acts in years. Read more »

H2O "Nothing to Prove"

H2O
“Nothing To Prove”
Bridge 9 Records

H2O have returned after a very long hiatus and their fans couldn’t be luckier. Clocking in at just under 30 minutes, “Nothing to Prove” is a potent melding of power punk and mid-90s hardcore, lacking any macho posturing and soaked with infectiously catchy tunes. H2O have never been known as a traditional hardcore act, eschewing the cookie monster vocals favored by their friends and contemporaries. Singer Toby Morse instead enunciates every word of the bands’ insightful lyrics, most of which eulogize about time gone by and expounds on positive attitudes. Read more »

Joy Division Documentary Hits NYC

Ian Curtis

It’s a shame that some of the best movies (particularly documentaries) never get released to the mass audience. Case in point: Joy Division. This penetrating look at one of the best bands to ever come out of Manchester hammers home the fact that this quartet became legends in only two years time and only a few hundred people can say they’ve seen them live.

The film gathers the surviving members of Joy Division for conversational one-on-one interviews that delve into the birth and rise of the group. They chat earnestly about singer Ian Curtis’s epilepsy and how they chose to not talk about it rather than help him. Even more moving is how the band admits that they never really paid attention to Curtis’s lyrics and didn’t realize how dark they were until he hung himself. Read more »

Grab Nine Inch Nail’s "The Slip" for Free

Not really my cup of tea, but free is good. Oh, and Vandal’s drummer Josh Freese is in the band. As of 12:01 a.m. PST May 5, Nine Inch Nails’ brand new full length album The Slip is available as free download at NIN.com.

Unlike NIN’s recently released Ghosts I-IV, there are NO paid options available for The Slip, nor are there any retail partners. At present, The Slip is available exclusively as a free download at NIN.com. A physical configuration on CD and vinyl is in the works for a July release.

The Slip marks the first time Nine Inch Nails–or any artist of NIN’s stature–has made its new album available completely and exclusively for free as a DRM-free digital download. The Slip is available as a high-quality MP3 or in a variety of lossless formats including, for the first time, a higher-than-CD quality 24 bit 96k version. All downloads include a PDF with credits and artwork. Read more »

Koffin Kats and Speed Crazy at Asbury Lanes

Live at Asbury Lanes

The Koffin Kats returned to the Garden State last Friday night for a never ending evening of all things psycho. The band played just about every song in their repertoire during the nearly two hour set, pausing only for a few seconds to chug a beer.

First up were The Hand Me Downs, an adrenaline-fueled punk rock band in the vein of Rancid and equally as punchy. I would have loved these guys when I was 16. Sure, the sound is a bit dated and done many times over, but it was worth it just for the two Operation Ivy covers.

I haven’t seen Speed Crazy since they tore through Connections a few years back. At the time, I was put off by the bands’ mile-a-minute guitar licks and thrashy stylings. I now realize that the off-putting live show might have been due to the now defunct club’s miserable sound system. At the Asbury Lanes, Speed Crazy came off like a powerhouse rockabilly band with mean riffs, cool vocals, and a groove that just doesn’t stop. Erica Kozak and Greg Baby traded vocals sweeter than Exene and John Doe, while Snake pummeled the skins behind a floodlight lit bass drum. This set was well worth the second chance. Read more »
