A Short Interview with Johnny X from liabungalo on Vimeo.

The Life In A Bungalo crew paid a visit to Mike Cavallaro’s booth at this year’s New York Comic Con where he enlightened us about his new comic Parade (with Fireworks).

It just took us a little while to get him to admit that he was really Johnny X - The coolest guitar player of 1997.

The video was shot with a Canon G9 and edited in iMovie HD.

Head: The Bungalo Interview Part II

This is the second part of a long ass Head interview conducted by our very own Sal Lucci. Click here to read Part I.

How did the split record with Metal Mike come about?
Metal Mike knew the guy who was putting out the single, who knew us, and found out that we were fans of the Samoans and his solo stuff as well, we were honored to be on the same slab of vinyl as Mr. Metal. Metal’s solo records sound great. His CD that has the Rockin’ Blewz (late 60’s band with his brother/original Samoans lead guitarist) is killer.

Where did you get the double-neck Mosrite used on the cover of The Monkeys LP?
That comes from the Head vaults, or a local guitar dealer in the area, who, while we were all pulling together, funneled every Mosrite he came across to us, and we went into deep debt to stock up on the Mosrite gear as much as possible. But that one doesn’t get played, it’s for “funsies” only. That’s Ree Ree’s.

Ree Ree: I’ll sell it for $2500 if anybody’s interested. I’ll also sell the two Orange amp stacks on the cover. $2500 a stack. Ben Weasel once left a message on my answering machine saying he liked Street Level Assault but we should take the tremolo bars off our Mosrites. I wonder what his take on double necks is? Ha ha. Head: The Life In A Bungalo Interview
Part I

Until about a year ago, I assumed Head broke up. Turns out they’ve been pretty busy over the past two years: new LP, new 7″, CD anthology, South by Southwest 2006 in Texas, Insubordination Fest 2007 in Maryland, Gonerfest 2007 in Tennessee… “Who the hell is Head?” some may ask. The greatest band from Seattle—ever. They never toured or put much effort into promoting themselves. Word of mouth, probably started by Ben Weasel (Screeching Weasel, the Riverdales) in his old Maximum RocknRoll column sometime in 1995, brought Head into my home in New Jersey. Imagine Metal Mike from the Angry Samoans fronting the Ramones. Hell, they were more Ramones-core than any other band that cited them as an influence. I got the chance to interview the band in early 2008. Read the rest of this entry »

Gogol Bordello Interview:
Bungalo Record of the Year

Gogol Bordello

Click here for a full photolog of Gogol Bordello

With his striking mustachioed looks and a sound that can make just about anyone break into a circle dance, Eugene Hutz has taken his troupe of gypsy punks from obscurity to stardom. The band: Gogol Bordello. The sound: Like nothing you’ve ever heard before. They straddle the line between Th’ Legendary Shackshakers and traditional gypsy flamenco, blending accordians, strings, and distorted guitars with tales of hope, defeat, and triumph.

This year, Gogol Bordello have released their best record to date, and hands down the record of the year at Life In A Bungalo. We gave frontman Eugene Hutz a call before his upcoming New Year’s Eve show at New York’s Terminal 5 to learn more about the band’s rise to stardom, and what it’s like being a punk in the Ukraine. This is a podcast interview. Please click on the player below to listen or drop the feed into your favorite podcast player.

Interview: The Donnas

Donnas Photo By Neil Zlozower

From the moment Lookout! Records released the self-titled Donnas record in 1997, punk rockers the world over were smitten with this quartet of rock & roll hotties. Luckily, the band had the chops to back up their pixie-like demeanor. These gals play rock as if it was forged into the Earth by a female god rather than Gene Simmons, and they shred harder than any of the punk rock boy band gracing the cover of Rolling Stone. The best part, they could probably kick my ass. Or at least shred it. Life In A Bungalo Digest chatted with drummer Torry Castellano about their new record, new label, and being forced to do dumb things at photo shoots. Transcribed interview will be up in a few weeks, but check out the podcast right now.

Mad Marge & The Stonecutters Interview

Mad Marge

I first heard Mad Marge two years ago on a psychobilly comp called “Return of the Hot Rod Zombies.” The song was “Shake,” and it completely changed the way I listened to female psychobilly singers. Rather than act all cutesy like some of her contemporaries, Mad Marge tore into the track like a vampire vixen on crank. The tune had more balls then most of street rock punk bands, yet the song was infectiously catchy. Turns out the band’s self-titled first record was brimming with songs like “Shake,” and even louder, faster numbers like “Monsters” and “Shallow Grave.” After three years of cruising the left coast, Mad Marge finally made it out to NYC. Life In A Bungalo decided to bother Mad Marge’s Alicia Ridenour while she was strolling through Central Park the day after a blistering set at The Knitting Factory. Read the rest of this entry »

Interview: Rise Against

Joe Principe

Rise Against managed to do the impossible. A quartet of California hardcore kids (including former members of punk band 88 Fingers Louie) got so big on Fat Wreck Chords that they incited a major label bidding war for their services. After signing to Geffen, they released their tightest, catchiest records to date and received complete creative control of their music. While bands like Thursday and H2O fought to break free of their major label chains, Rise Against embraced the machine and used the band’s success to promote their music and message. Life In A Bungalo spoke with founding member and bassist Joe Principe to find out what all the fuss is about. Read the rest of this entry »

Interview: Jim Lindberg

Jim Lindberg

Radio Bungalo is pleased to present an interview with Jim Lindberg, lead singer of Pennywise. Besides being the vocalist of one of the biggest bands since the mid-’90s punk explosion, Lindberg is an accomplished author, recently releasing his acclaimed memoir, “Punk Rock Dad.” The book sounds like it might be a silly coming of age story about a out of control punk, but in actuality it is a look at life on the road for one of the hardest working independent bands. This interview will be transcribed next week for those who would rather read than listen, but I encourage you to hear Lindberg talk about his daughters, writing, and life in Pennywise. Feel free to post a comment about your favorite Pennywise memory.
