Sleater-Kinney
"The Woods"
Sub Pop
I’m not a huge fan of Sleater-Kinney. I don’t dislike
them, but I don’t feel the need to rush out and buy all of their
albums. But I’m going to try to objectively review this album.
The three grrrls from the Pacific Northwest have put out another album.
And it sounds, well, like their other albums. The first thing I noticed
when I put this cd in my computer is that one single song constitutes
almost 25% of the album. That is just ridiculous. Even worse, it is
a pretty bad song. Overall, this is an ok album. Some songs are good;
some are bad. But over all, the album is just somewhat forgettable.
After listening to it 2 times straight through, only 4 things stuck
in my mind:
1) Wow, that last song was pretty good.
2) Wow, the second to last song was really bad, and 11 minutes long.
3) Wow, Corin Tucker sounds more and more like Ethyl Merman and Geddy
Lee’s love child every day.
4) Wow, this sounds just like every other Sleater-Kinney album I’ve
ever heard.
I’m not exaggerating; I don’t remember anything else from
this album. While this is far from a compliment, it isn’t really
an insult either. This is neither good nor bad. Neither light nor dark.
Neither yin nor yang. It is simply a forgettable album that you won’t
love or loathe.
If by chance you are a Sleater-Kinney fan, disregard this whole review.
You will in fact LOVE this album.
