"The Repulsion Box"
Domino
Sons
and Daughters have written a near-perfect record, combining punky
beats and simple guitar style with folky celtic singing that just
grooves.
From
the spastic staccato drumming on "Medicine" to the raucously wild
"Dance With Me" this band has rock down pat, yet magically tow the
line of indie-pop. Male/female voices trade verses on a few tracks,
with singer Scott Paterson pulling a Nick Cave-like drawl on a few
songs. But the highlight of the record is Adele Bethel's Gaelic chirping
throughout the record.
The
only flaw is "Red Receiver," which borrows so liberally from The
Violent Femmes that it leaves the listener wondering if perhaps it's
a cover--It's not.
It
took nearly a year for one of the best records of 2005 to turn up,
but here you have it... "Repulsion Box" is a keeper for anyone who's
tired of the usual indie-rock suspects.
